The island's official name is the Commonwealth of Dominica, which is mostly use in official communication and to help distinguish the island from the Dominican Republic which is located in the northerly part of the Caribbean. The indigenous Carib Indians named the island Waitukubuli which means "Tall is Her Body" in the Carib language. The island is lightly populated with around 70,000 people inhabiting its 289.5 square miles, where a significant portion of the population lives in and around the capital city, Roseau. Dominica was picked as one of the best rated island destination by National Geographic Traveler sustainable and destination experts. Below are some the comments:
"The Nature Isle is aptly named-awesome power and incredible beauty of nature unspoiled. Its lush mountains, indigenous population, art, craft, agro-based products, and small-scale accommodation facilities all add to the opportunity for sustainable tourism development."
Dominica is the Rembrandt of unspoiled nature filled with rivers, lakes, streams, and waterfalls abound, fed by the islands high annual rainfall. Dominica's volcanic physique points to extensive geothermal activity above and below sea level. Our Morne Trois Pitons National Park was the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in the eastern Caribbean. Tropical forest coats two thirds of the island, which nourishes 1,200 plant species.
"Beautiful country. Still largely forested, amazing biodiversity, great bird watching and scuba diving. Because Dominica doesn't possess the traditional beaches of the Caribbean, it is often overlooked." "A serious dichotomy between lip service to preserving and protecting its wilderness, which is the major product, and the soliciting of more cruise ships, the proposed oil refinery, and support for Japan on the whaling issue." Dominica is one of the only two islands in the Caribbean which still has a population of the early indigenous Carib Indians today. The island is about 80% of the population is Roman Catholic. English is the official language, spoken with a melodic French lilt, but a large portion of the population speaks Kweyol (Creole), with a few northern villages speaking Kokoy.
Our project "Dominica Island: Photo Travel Guide" dedicated to the Caribbean island of Dominica, its capital Roseau, Dominican people, Caribbean architecture, nature and to everything are connect with the Commonwealth of Dominica.

With miles of pristine coastline and unspoilt mountainous rainforests, it's no wonder Dominica has long been a favored travel destination. In fact, Dominica is so beloved that many vacationers decide to buy Caribbean timeshare and return annually. Even if you're not in the market to purchase, timeshare rentals are a great way to try out the luxurious timeshare lifestyle and to get to know the different areas of Dominica Island. Plus, you can usually rent timeshare for a fraction of the cost of what you'd pay to stay in a hotel of similar quality.

These newly published photos are some of the most amazing photos of Dominica we’ve ever posted up on the site. We are pretty fun of our first night walk, where we decided we were going to try to take some night photos around Roseau (Dominica is exceptionally beautiful at night). To our surprise the night photos came out better than what we ever anticipated. Soon we will be going out on our second night walk, so look out for more Dominica night photos soon. And did I mention that this is the only site were you can view nighttime photos of Dominica (well to my knowledge). We’ve also added some Traditional Architecture and Commercial buildings from around Roseau (Historic Buildings, Verandahs, Porticoes, Gardens in the City of Roseau, Windows, Banks, Communication, Restaurants, Shops). 2008/05/11 We published the third part of photos about Dominica: Anchorage Hotel, Evergreen Hotel 2007/12/19 We published the second part of photos about Dominica: Dominica Nature (Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, Beach, Plants and Animals), Dominica Tour Guide (Trafalgar Falls, Cabrits National Park, Red Rock Beach), Dominica hotels (Fort Young Hotel and Jungle Bay). 2007/11/18 We published the first part of photos about Dominica: Holidays and Events, Carnival, Education, Dominica People. 2007/05/25 That is birthday of dominica-island.com idea. |
